Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Children of Memory – Book 2 of the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky – release date – 24th November, 2022

BLURB: Earth is failing. In a desperate bid to escape, the spaceship Enkidu and its captain, Heorest Holt, carry its precious human cargo to a potential new Eden. Generations later, this fragile colony has managed to survive, eking out a hardy existence. Yet life is tough, and much technological knowledge has been lost.
Then Liff, Holt’s granddaughter, hears whispers that the strangers in town aren’t from neighbouring farmland. That they possess unparalleled technology – and that they’ve arrived from another world. But not all questions are so easily answered, and their price may be the colony itself.
The first book in this series, Children of Time, is one of my all-time favourite colonisation adventures – I just loved those spiders… While the second book, Children of Ruin wasn’t quite as successful, nonetheless I’m delighted to have got hold of this third book in the series – especially as the premise is so intriguing.
I was hoping to read Children of Time during Sci Fi Month, but I’m not sure I’ll have time. We’ll see, I’d love to FINALLY start this series😁
I do hope you manage to squeeze it into your reading schedule, Tammy. It’s so quirky and unusual, while also gently parodying some of the main tropes of space opera…
This sounds quiet interesting. I don’t read sci-fi very often, but I do make exceptions.
My advice would be to give Children of Time a go – you’ll struggle if you suffer from arachnophobia, but for my money it’s one of the best books AT has ever written:)).
Thanks, I actually like spiders so that isn’t an issue for me.
Yay! I also am very fond of spiders – in fact, I really like all creepy crawlies. So long as they know their place and stay outside:).
Yes, I prefer them outside too, but when they visit, I help them back out again.
Lol…
This sounds really good! I hope you enjoy this one as much as the first. 😀
Thank you, Ashley – fingers crossed:)).
This is an author I’ve heard so much about, I’m keen to try him one of these days!
He’s really worth reading. Other books I’d particularly recommend of his – Bear Head, Ogres, The Expert System’s Brother, as well as his awesome Echoes of the Fall epic fantasy series. But I love the way he turns familiar tropes on their head and his wry humour – he also happens to be a lovely chap, which is always a bonus…
Sounds interesting. You do make book one sound good. I’ll have to look into it. Hope you enjoy this one!
I think Tchaikovsky won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Children of Time – so it really is worth checking up:)).
Thank you, Laura:). I LOVED The Deep End, Julie Mulhern’s first book in The Country Club Murder series, by the way… Thank you for the recommendation:))).
Like you, I loved the first book (despite the spiders!!!! LOL) but was not so enthusiastic about the second. The synopsis of this third volume in the series sounds more than promising: I LOVE colonization stories… 🙂
Thanks for sharing!!!
Yes! I would have picked this one up anyway as I really enjoy Tchaikovsky’s writing – but the colonisation aspect certainly is icing on the cake:)).
I was excited for you as soon as I saw this author had a new book coming out soon since I know he’s one of your favorites. I hope this latest installment is a fantastic read for you!
Thank you, Suzanne – I’m certainly looking forward to this one with anticipation!
You described my feelings for the first two books exactly – I also LOVED the first book, and the second was only okay. But that’s not going to stop me from sinking my teeth into this one when it comes out, can’t wait!
