BLURB: Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar to cut off her powers. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged mage, but her family are in severe debt, and only her marriage can save them.
Beatrice finds a grimoire with the key to becoming a mage, but a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands. Beatrice summons a spirit to help, but her new ally exacts a price: Beatrice’s first kiss . . . with the sorceress’s brother: the handsome, compassionate, and fabulously wealthy Ianthe Lavan.
I recently read Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal and was looking around for something else similar. And when I came across this Netgalley arc, I was delighted to be approved for it. I love that cover for starters – and when I read the blurb, I was sold. I’m aware that it’s already been released in the States, but am looking forward to tucking into it. Has anyone else read this one?
I’ve heard really good things about this. I actually have a NetGalley ARC too but haven’t read it yet, oops. I’ll look forward to your review!
I’ve been scrambling to catch up with my Netgalley arcs, as I fell behind a bit during March, so I know the feeling! But yes, I’m looking forward to getting to this one:)).
Ah well, a story with vibes similar to Kowal’s Glamourists series is one I have to keep on my radar! 🙂
Yes, I’m hoping that’s what I’ve got… All will be revealed when I tuck into it:)).
Midnight Bargain has long been on my wish list. I love that cover too. I hope you love it when you read it, Sarah!
Thank you, Wendy! I’m really looking forward to getting to this one:)).
This sounds quite intriguing Sarah. Now that I am enjoying some fantasy, I think I will add this to my TBR.
I hope you enjoy it! I can recommend Shades of Milk and Honey, particularly if you are a Jane Austen fan, as it plays with several of those books in a clever, nuanced way.
Thanks Sarah, I will check it out.
I haven’t heard of this one before, but I’m really intrigued by the blurb and the cover.
This sounds awesome and I love the cover! Thanks for sharing! I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

I’ve now tucked into this one, Anne – and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Yes, it’s a beautiful cover! And I’ve heard great things about it too!
Ooo, the worldbuilding here intrigues me. A marital collar? That definitely raises the stakes!
Oh yes – it’s grim. And I was a tad wrong-footed, because I was expecting something a bit lighter. But it is thought provoking and a lot of folks whose opinion I respect absolutely loved it.
