Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Afterland by Lauren Beukes – release date 3rd September, 2020

BLURB: They’ll call her a bad mother.
Cole can live with that. Because when she breaks her son Miles out of the Male Protection Facility – designed to prevent him joining the 99% of men wiped off the face of the Earth – she’s not just taking him back.
She’s setting him free.
Leaving Miles in America would leave him as a lab experiment; a pawn in the hands of people who now see him as a treasure to be guarded, traded, and used. What kind of mother would stand by and watch her child suffer? But as their journey to freedom takes them across a hostile and changed country, freedom seems ever more impossible.
It’s time for Cole to prove just how far she’ll go to protect her son.

What caught my eye was that this is a story about a mother trying to save her son in a world where the majority of men have died off. I have enjoyed Beukes writing – see my review of Zoo City and Moxyland – so I am intrigued to see what she is proposing to do with this scenario…
I’m hoping to read this soon, although I have seen some mixed reviews. I love the UK cover much more than the US one😁
Yes – I didn’t get on with The Shining Girls, but fingers crossed that I love this one! I thought the premise was very interesting…
It is an intriguing scenario. I hope you enjoy this one.
Oh what an interesting premise! Very, very intriguing. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this! 😀
This sounds like such an intriguing read! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
You’re very welcome, Ashley:))
This is a great pick and it’s already on my TBR. This is the first time I’ve seen this cover though.
It’s a pretty cover, isn’t it? It’s the UK edition and is the one featured on my Netgalley arc. Let’s hope we both enjoy this one, Barb!
I’m quite excited to read this – I’ve only read Broken Monsters, but I’ve wanted to read more by her!
I highly, highly recommend Zoo City, Mogsy – it absolutely blew me away by the sheer originality of the premise and the amazing writing. I’m hoping this one will come close…
Oh wow, this sounds like it’s going to be a pretty intense and emotional read with the mom trying to save her son. I hope you love it!
Yes – I’m hoping I’ll love it, too. I was looking for something a bit different, so was drawn by the dynamic of a protective mother.
I adore a good dystopian tale, this one looks great. Happy reading!
It certainly does, doesn’t it? Fingers crossed I love it…
This is definitely not a blurb I was expecting — I was just reading this week Beuke’s Shining Girls is going to be a show with Elisabeth Moss. Definitely an author I should be checking out.
I highly recommend Zoo City, which is an amazing read – and mostly the reason why I requested this one. And the mother-related storyline, of course:)
Interesting premise. Hope you enjoy this one!
Thank you, Laura – I hope so, too:)
I’m intrigued by the description of this book. I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you, Yvonne – I hope I enjoy it, too!
This definitely sounds different! I hope you enjoy reading it!
My CWW!
Thank you, Kait – I’m certainly looking forward to it:))
