Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Ink and Sigil – Book 1 of the Ink and Sigil series by Kevin Hearne – release date 27th August, 2020

BLURB: Al MacBharrais is both blessed and cursed. He is blessed with an extraordinary white moustache, an appreciation for craft cocktails–and a most unique magical talent. He can cast spells with magically enchanted ink and he uses his gifts to protect our world from rogue minions of various pantheons, especially the Fae.
But when his latest apprentice, Gordie, turns up dead in his Glasgow flat, Al discovers evidence that Gordie was living a secret life of crime. Now Al is forced to play detective–while avoiding actual detectives who are wondering why death seems to always follow Al. Investigating his apprentice’s death will take him through Scotland’s magical underworld, and he’ll need the help of a mischievous hobgoblin if he’s to survive.
This is a spin-off from the hugely popular Iron Druid series, which I loved – see my review of Hounded – so I’m looking forward to this one with a great deal of anticipation. There should be some enjoyable knockabout humour, and I’m also pleased to see a protagonist in his sixties, so not in the first flush of youth. As he’s in the throes of a magical curse that means he can only speak at cost of his life, I’m intrigued to see how that plays out without compromising the flow and pace of the story. But this is Kevin Hearne, people! So it should be awesome.
This one looks and sounds good! It’s a great thing you don’t have to wait that long to put your hands on it 😀 Hope you are going to enjoy it a lot!
Thank you, Silvia – yes, I’m really looking forward to it. And between then and now, I have a slew of enjoyable books to tuck into, anyway:))
I’m excited to read this too. Although I haven’t read the Iron Druid series so hopefully it will still work for me😁
Given it’s set in a different part of the world – and Hearne is now an experience author, I don’t think he’s likely to commit such a fundamental mistake!
Love that cover! I think I got to meet this author one time, or at least hear him speak at a convention even though I haven’t read him before. Hope you get this soon!
Check out my Wednesday post
I’ve got this one on pre-order, so I don’t have to wait too long, thankfully:)). And yes – isn’t the cover great?
Ooh I like the sound of this! 😀 And who doesn’t love a man with a big white moustache and a penchant for cocktails! I should probably check out The Iron Druid series while I’m at it!
Oh yes – do check out the Iron Druid series – it’s so much fun… I’m really looking forward to this one, too!
I hadn’t heard of Hearne, but the blurb sounds delightful. I love witty humor. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the book. Will you post a review?
Yes, I will definitely be writing a review about this one, Diana:)
I’m excited for this one as well! I hope you love it!
Oh me, too. Let’s hope we both love it:))
I’ve only read the first tow books from the Iron Druid series, but I confess I’m curious about this one! This being a spinoff, I wonder if I can jump in without being caught up, hmm!
Oh yes – the blurb makes it quite clear that this is in a completely different corner of the world.
Here’s to… well-seasoned main characters, indeed! 🙂
Nothing can compare with decades-long experience….
Oh absolutely, Maddalena! I’m really, really looking forward to this one:))
Ahhh what what what?!?! I had no idea he was working on a spin offf!! OMGGGG!!! (In case you missed it I am so excited about this!!)
Delighted to hear that you are SO excited about this one – me too! And very pleased to be the one to break it to you:))
I’m waiting on this one too. I haven’t started the iron druid books yet, but thought this might be a good introduction to his writing. Hope we both enjoy it!
So do I, Laura:))
I vow to start the Iron Druid series soon. So many people have told me I will fall in love with Oberon. This one is quite popular and I’m sure it’s going to be another great read.
Oh yes – Cassius will never forgive you if you deprive him of Oberon’s obsessions with poodles and sausages!
I love that this book features an older protagonist. We need more books that do that.
What Mogsy said. I probably need to complete the Iron Druid chronicles although this is calling to me.
Lynn 😀
Though by all accounts I really don’t think it matters – from the blurb the only thing in common is the world…
