BLURB: For the crime of stealing bread, fourteen-year-old May receives a life sentence: she must become a Sin Eater—a shunned woman, brutally marked, whose fate is to hear the final confessions of the dying, eat ritual foods symbolizing their sins as a funeral rite, and thereby shoulder their transgressions to grant their souls access to heaven.
Orphaned and friendless, apprenticed to an older Sin Eater who cannot speak to her, May must make her way in a dangerous and cruel world she barely understands. When a deer heart appears on the coffin of a royal governess who did not confess to the dreadful sin it represents, the older Sin Eater refuses to eat it. She is taken to prison, tortured, and killed. To avenge her death, May must find out who placed the deer heart on the coffin and why.
Having the depth of a pavement puddle, I cannot deny it – this gorgeous cover bewitched me. Though I was also intrigued by the premise – it sounds both original and plausible in a twisted way. After all, there was a thriving trade in selling pardons to frightened sinners throughout the Middle Ages. So I’m really looking forward to tucking into this one.
I’m excited for this too. And I’m just as shallow, I love the cover! It’s the first time I’ve seen the UK cover, it’s just as pretty as the US one😁
Lol… well that’s a relief! I must check out the US cover, too:))
Great choice, Sarah. And what a fabulous cover!
Thank you, Laura – it is a fantastic cover! I like the premise, too…
That blurb really does sound good. I shall add this to my TBR.
That’s great, Louise – it certainly grabbed my attention!
Such an intriguing premise!
It is, isn’t it, Becky?
Now THAT is a cover! And it sounds great too. Nice choice!
Thank you, Barb. I’m really excited about this one and looking forward to getting stuck into it:))
Gorgeous book indeed and that sounds like a really interesting read! Hope you love it!
Thank you! I’m hoping so, too. I’m quite excited about this one…
I can’t believe this is the first I’ve heard of this, it looks good!
Yes, it does, doesn’t it? That cover is scrummy…
Oh, I am with you, the cover is gorgeous — and the blurb is very unexpected. There’s such cruelty to what May goes through, but I also want to know what she finds out.
I know! And it sounds nicely original, too…
What an intriguing premise! And yes, that cover is a feast for the eyes… 🙂
Thank you, Maddalena – I’m really looking forward to getting to this one…
I can totally understand how you were bewitched by this gorgeous cover! 😁
I know! I personally think it is enchanted…
I love that phrase: “the depth of a pavement puddle.” Haha. It is a lovely cover. The book sounds really unique. Definitely worth looking into! I hope you enjoy it when you read it, Sarah!
Yes – it certainly ticks all the boxes for anyone who is genuinely looking for something different. Though I’m aware it is a Marmite book that will divide readers…
I do have a copy of this one and can’t wait to start – plus that cover.
Lynn 😀
Yippee! It’s always more fun when there is at least another person to compare notes with:))
That cover definitely attracted my eye. The blurb sounds really interesting as well. Good pick Sarah.
I’m hoping so!
(going to library site and ordering (again))
What REALLY got me here, I must say, is the title–not for this current story, but for its pseudo-doppleganger in Christian Lit. I recall seeing it on display when I worked in a bookstore oh so many years ago. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Sin-Eater-Francine-Rivers/dp/1414370660
It is a cracking story – the author uses the whole idea of sin eaters in a really effective, if creepy and repulsive way…
