Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. I’m linking this week’s fantasy offering with Wyrd and Wonder 2020.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Shadow in the Empire of Light by Jane Routley
– release date, 4th August, 2020

BLURB: MAGIC. MURDER. MAYHEM. But keep it in the family.
Shine’s life is usually dull: an orphan without magic in a family of powerful mages, she’s left to run the family estate with only an eccentric aunt and telepathic cat for company.
But when the family descend on the house for the annual Fertility Festival, Shine is plunged into dark intrigue; stolen letters, a fugitive spy, and family drama mix with murder, sex and secrets, and Shine is forced to decide both her loyalties and future…
It was the cover that did it for me this time around – and the strapline. I’m a sucker for quirky magical stories, particularly when you add family relationships and tensions into the mix. It also looks as if it doesn’t take itself too desperately seriously and I’m yearning for some fun in my escapism at the moment. So what with one thing and another, I’m really looking forward to this one. Has anyone else helped themselves to this NG arc?

That blurb might be short but it packs a punch of curiosity for me!
My CWW
Thank you, Jenea. I hope it fulfils the promise of the blurb:))
I agree, family drama is my favorite😁 This sounds really good, and that cover is definitely making me want to read it!
Yes… I’m hoping that this one is going to work out, Tammy:)
I completely agree! I have this in my NG queue. I am slowly working my way toward it. A bit of escapism is just what I need right now!
Me too, Katie:). Though I’m now a tad concerned as I’ve seen that there are some sexy scenes mentioned in other reviews. And that wasn’t what I thought I was getting!
Oh goodness, I didn’t look at the early reviews before I requested it. If they don’t matter for the plot I often skip over those scenes. Thank you for the follow!
You’re very welcome – thank you for swinging by. And fingers crossed this one works out!
Those are the same things that grabbed me. Sounds like a good pick for your escapism. 🙂
Let’s hope so, Tressa – I’ve seen other reviews on Goodreads that make me a bit worried…
You had me at telepathic cat. I don’t always enjoy them in real world type scenarios, but I do love them in a book like this. I hope you enjoy it when you read it, Sarah.
I hope so, too! Since I posted this, I had a peep at other Goodreads reviews and I’m a tad disturbed to see mentions of a lot of sex. If that’s the case, I will be really fed up – because whatever message that cover conveys, hot sex isn’t part of it.
This one sounds interesting!
Yes it does – but I’m a bit concerned there’s more sex in there than that throwaway mention merits, if some of the reviews on Goodreads are a guide…
Oh I 10000% agree — the cover and the tagline RULE!
:))
Short blurbs turn out to be the most effective – and nothing could be more intriguing than: “magic, murder, mayhem”! 🙂
Hey this looks good..well of course you know that as you picked it!!🤣
Thank you, Kimberly – I’m hoping it is going to be as promising as the premise suggests:))
I’m always up for a book with a magical pet. Heck you know me, I’m up for any pet 🙂 Thanks for sharing this one. I need to check it out!
Thank you, Barb! Yes – I am not too sure about this one after having read some reviews since I posted – but I’m hoping it turns out to be okay…
That book does sound good and the cover looks great too.
I’m hoping it is going to be good read, Lola:))
I couldn’t agree more. I love that cover, it really appeals to me and the strapline too.
Lynn 😀
I’m hoping it fulfils my expectations!
