Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – The Mother Code by Carol Stivers – release date, 5th May, 2020
#science fiction #coming of age adventure #cyborg
BLURB:It’s 2049, and the survival of the human race is at risk. The earth’s inhabitants must turn to their last resort, a plan to place genetically engineered children inside the cocoons of large-scale robots—to be incubated, birthed, and raised by machines. But there is yet one hope of preserving the human order: an intelligence programmed into these machines that renders each unique in its own right—the Mother Code.
Kai is born in America’s desert southwest, his only companion his robotic Mother, Rho-Z. Equipped with the knowledge and motivations of a human mother, Rho-Z raises Kai and teaches him how to survive. But as children like Kai come of age, their Mothers transform too—in ways that were never predicted. And when government survivors decide that the Mothers must be destroyed, Kai must make a choice. Will he break the bond he shares with Rho-Z? Or will he fight to save the only parent he has ever known?
I am always on the lookout for new science fiction authors. And this coming of age story set in a post-apocalyptic world sounds like an interesting read. My only misgiving is that I’d requested it well before the current crisis kicked off – and I’m not sure that it is exactly what I want to read right now. However, I’ll give it a go and see how I get on! Like many others, I’m feeling very picky about my reading at present…
Hmm, that’s an interesting approach to the AI/sentience theme. Sounds like it could be a great read.
I’ve never seen this cover before, I love it! It’s way better than the U.S. cover. I have an ARC of this but I think the release date has been pushed to August, at least in the US. I’m looking forward to it!
Yes – and I’ve just caught up with the fact that the release date has been pushed to August. I’m wondering if it’s because we’re bang in the middle of a pandemic and the publishers are thinking that would hurt sales (I think they might be right…)
I think it sounds really good and I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for stopping by My CWW.
Yes please! This looks absolutely amazing.

Oh, I’m glad you think it looks exciting, too:)
I know what you mean. I really have noticed a few of the books I’ve been interested in seem a little close to home now. But this does sound good.
Yes! That is a bit of a problem, when we are living dystopian sci fi…
What a terrible position to be put in! I feel for Kai and Rho-Z. I hadn’t heard of this one before, but will definitely keep my eye out for it. It sounds like it will. E good. I hope you enjoy it when you read it! Stay safe and well.
It sounds an intriguing premise, doesn’t it? I’ve just checked on Netgalley – and it’s still available to get hold of, if you are interested Wendy…
Love that cover!
Check out my Wednesday post
It’s cool, isn’t it – it was the cover that caught my eye…
Very interesting cover, I like it. I hope you enjoy this one Sarah.
Thank you, Carla – I’m looking forward to it:))
This sounds great, maybe not something I’d read right now but definitely once we’re on the other side of this pandemic. The cover is really cool too.
This is definitely on my radar! I signed up for a tour recently, I hope I hear back!
Fingers crossed that you do, Mogsy:). It sounds like a really intriguing premise.
Oh my, how do the Mothers transform? It brings up some great character potential — I hope it’s a good read!
Thank you, Verushka – I hope it’s good, too:))
This does sound good. I hope you love it.
Lynn 😀
Yes – I’m hoping that it works out to be a really strong book. The publication date has now been pushed back, thankfully.
I think Netflix did something similar to this! A really intriguing premise. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Mother
