Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Athena’s Champion – Book 1 of the Olympus series by David Hair and Cath Mayo
#Greek myth retelling #fantasy #magic #troubled hero
Prince Odysseus of Ithaca is about to have his world torn apart. He’s travelled to the oracle at Pytho to be anointed as heir to his island kingdom; but instead the Pythia reveals a terrible secret, one that tears down every pillar of his life, and marks him out for death.
Outcast by his family, hunted by the vengeful gods, Odysseus is offered sanctuary by Athena, goddess of wisdom, and thrust into the secret war between the Olympians for domination and survival. Only his wits, and his skill as a warrior, can keep him ahead of their power games – and alive.
I’m a sucker for Greek retellings and this one, due out on 8th November, is a cracking version. Many thanks to the person on this site who recommended this book – sorry I can’t recall who it was!
Oooh, I hope this turns out to be a brilliant read — it definitely sounds exciting!
I’ve actually read this one and absolutely loved it. Odysseus is a very sympathetic protagonist and the story is a gripping adventure read – though I’m very relieved I wasn’t born a woman into that society!
I recently read The Silence of the Girls, which made me fall in love with Greek retellings. Now I’m interested in this one!
I really recommend it – the authors have clearly done a great deal of research and brought in a lot of detail from Homer’s Iliad, leading up to the Trojan War, but it is still very readable.
I perked right up at vengeful gods. This sounds thrilling.
It is, Laura – I loved it.
I agree about the Greek myths with all their gods and goddesses. Lots of great stories to tell and this sounds like a great premise.
Yes – I was really impressed with this one – it really catches the flavour of the time and has been clearly well researched, Jan.
This does sound good, I feel like I need to read more Greek mythology retellings because I always enjoy them when I find a good one😊
I highly recommend this one – and it is the start of a series, which is always good news when you find a really cracking read:)
This sounds promising. Hey, when I come to your author page I always click on new blog posts at the bottom. It isn’t updating there. Newest post shows Friday Faceoff . It tripped me up over the weekend but now that I know, I just click home button when I get to blog page, Thought you’d want to know.
Thank you for that, Kimberly. I’ve gone in the check up and you’re absolutely right. My web tech chap always has to physically reload my blogs onto the website due to the odd manner in which webpage designer initially set up the whole thing – all I can guess is that Ian is a bit stacked up and has fallen behind. Another way of getting straight onto the most recent post is to click on the BLOG button at the top of the page which takes you straight there – but I freely agree it’s a rather quirky system!
I went to double check and was surprised to find I’d read some of David Hair’s books! But didn’t even know about this one, I thought it was by the guy who wrote the Percy Jacksons until I read your post closely. Hope it turns out good!
I’ve got some of David Hair’s books, but haven’t got around to reading them yet. And it’s a really good read:)).
I love Greek Myth retellings! It certainly does sound promising. I’m sure I’d like this one. Hope you do!
I loved it, Sassy and am looking forward to the next one:))
Adding this to my wishlist right away! I am a big fan of David Hair and I’ve been wondering what he’s been up to lately and when his next project is coming out…now I know!
I’m delighted:)). I look forward to hearing what you make of this one – and I clearly need to read more of his work.
I’m also a sucker for Greek retellings so thanks or highlighting this one.
Lynn 😀
You’re welcome:))
Oh I love the Greek mythology tie in! I’ve enjoyed each one I’ve read which hasn’t been nearly enough!
I love this era, too, Katherine – and this one is a really cracking read:)
A Greek retelling? Count me in!
I know! That’s what I felt when I saw this one was available…
I adore Odysseus and Greek retellings so this is definitely going to my TBR! How closely does it follow the original story?
As far as I can gather, the retelling follows the original story really closely, though completely from Odysseus’s viewpoint and also positing some of the ideas from the Illiad. Hair and Mayo have clearly done their research.
Good to know, thank you!
All these recent Greek myth re-tellings sound so good! This is definitely one I would like to read. I remember loving The Odyssey when I read it.
If you enjoyed The Odyssey, you’ll love this…:)
I’m a sucker for this sort of thing, too. Plunking it down to 2019’s TBR list!
You won’t be disappointed – at least I hope you won’t! I absolutely loved it.
