Standard

This is part of the weekly meme over at the Caffeinated Reviewer, where book bloggers can share the books and blogs they have written.

I have been busy rewriting the second book in The Arcadian Chronicles series, Mantivore Preys, as I’d like to be able to self-publish the first three books about a telepathic alien in close succession. Other than that, my blogging buddy Mhairi spent Monday with me, as we loaded up the corrected proofs for the paperback version of Running Out of Space. And on Wednesday the print proof copy arrived! I leapt around the house, whooping with excitement and as luck would have it – I was able to show it off to my sister, when we met up for lunch, as well as some of my writing friends. Brenda prepared us the most delicious meal on Wednesday evening with lots of lovely veggie dishes. On Thursday evening, I went to Chichester Theatre to see a performance of the world premiere of The Meeting – a really interesting play about a Friends’ Meeting House and how they react when a fleeing soldier pitches up in their midst…

On Friday, some of my students had planned to have a picnic at Marine Gardens in Worthing and invited me along. In the event, we were a select group – and we certainly weren’t picnicking as gale-force winds and torrential rain battered the coastline. We ended up in the café, chatting about writing, the world and everything over a yummy bowl of homemade soup. And on Saturday, Himself, my sister and I went for a walk along the River Arun in Arundel – I love the sound of the wind in the reeds…

I got a nasty shock this week. During our cosy catch-up on Wednesday, my sister demonstrated her new blood pressure machine on me. Then blinked and did it again, as it turns out my bp is way too high. I eat sensibly, don’t drink or smoke so I’m guessing the culprit is my very sedentary lifestyle and the fact the weight has crept back on. Before I go to the docs, I’m going to give myself a month where I try to get it down with a regime of exercise and losing those extra pounds that have rolled back onto my hips and tummy when I wasn’t looking. Watch this space!

This week I have read:

Pirate Nemesis – Book 1 of the Telepathic Space Pirates series by Carysa Locke
Mercy Kincaid is a fugitive from her own family. Her dangerous telepathic gifts make her a target. So is anyone she gets close to. When her best friend is captured and tortured, Mercy’s only hope is to reunite with the family that tried to murder her as a child. She trusts few among her blood relatives, but finds herself intrigued by an enigmatic and dangerous killer.

Reaper has spent a lifetime watching his people die. He’s vowed to kill anyone who jeopardizes their survival. Mercy’s gifts are the biggest threat they’ve faced in eleven years, since a biological weapon nearly annihilated the pirate colonies. But Reaper realizes her talents can either destroy them, or save them.
Entertaining space opera adventure with a really nicely creepy antagonist.

Hero at the Fall – Book 3 of The Rebel of the Sands series by Alwyn Hamilton
When gunslinging Amani Al’Hiza escaped her dead-end town, she never imagined she’d join a revolution, let alone lead one. But after the bloodthirsty Sultan of Miraji imprisoned the Rebel Prince Ahmed in the mythical city of Eremot, she doesn’t have a choice. Armed with only her revolver, her wits, and her untameable Demdji powers, Amani must rally her skeleton crew of rebels for a rescue mission through the unforgiving desert to a place that, according to maps, doesn’t exist. As she watches those she loves most lay their lives on the line against ghouls and enemy soldiers, Amani questions whether she can be the leader they need or if she is leading them all to their deaths.
I loved the first two books in this entertaining sand and sorcery series – see my review of The Rebel of the Sands – and wanted to find out how it all finishes, given how very high the stakes have become. Review to follow.

Garrison Girl – Book 1 of the Attack on Titan! series by Rachel Aaron
An original novel, with all-new characters and a new story set in the world of Attack on Titan! Fans of the series and readers alike will enjoy this immersive and engaging experience of the pop culture phenomenon and manga mega-hit.

With the last vestige of the human race threatened by unstoppable carnivorous giants, a brave young woman decides to defy her wealthy family and join the military to fight against humanity’s enemies. But Rosalie Dumarque soon finds out that bloody sword fights with monsters aren’t the only dangers faced by the Wall Rose Garrison. Can she earn the trust of her fellow soldiers, stand up to a corrupt authority, navigate a forbidden romance…and cut her way out of a titan’s throat?
Action-packed and engrossing debut to this interesting series. I will be reviewing this one tomorrow.

Anachronism – novella by Jennifer Lee Rossman
It’s the same old story: Time traveler meets girl, time traveler tells girl she’s the future president, time traveler and girl go on a road trip to prevent a war…

Petra Vincent is at the end of her rope – or rather, the edge of a bridge. Her world is falling apart around her and she sees no way out of the meaningless existence the future has in store. But when stranded time traveler Moses Morgan tells her that she will one day lead the country out of the rubble of a nuclear civil war as President of the United States, she’s intrigued – and when another time traveler starts trying to preemptively assassinate her, she realizes Moses might be telling the truth…
I loved this foot-to-the-floor adventure and rather lost my heart to Petra, the despairing young woman who discovers she has a shining destiny – if only she can survive to fulfil it. And there’s that twist… marvellous stuff!

Interesting/outstanding blogs and articles that have caught my attention during the last week, in no particular order:

50 Ways to Reward Yourself http://www.bryndonovan.com/2018/07/30/50-ways-to-reward-yourself/ Okay – put your hand up if you have recently given yourself a proper treat – no… I’m not talking about scoffing a sticky bun that you shouldn’t be eating, anyway. I’m talking about a proper reward to acknowledge an achievement. Hm. Thought so… you need to read this, then.

The Wordwitch: A Writer’s Life in Pictures – July http://melfka.com/archives/2864 I love these clever drawings – they don’t just sum up Joanna’s writing life. Many of us have the same issues…

Mash ups – it could work! https://lynns-books.com/2018/08/07/mash-ups-it-could-work/ I loved the idea of some of these – the idea of The Shining mashed with The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe had me cackling with laughter…

Face Lift https://thestoryreadingapeblog.com/2018/08/06/face-lift/ Apparently we are hard-wired to recognise faces – but this is taking that ability too far, I feel…

A Short Introduction to the Haiku https://interestingliterature.com/2018/08/08/a-short-introduction-to-the-haiku/ We all know about this verse form, given we write these at school – right? Wrong, apparently – it’s not that straightforward, for starters…

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to visit, like and comment on my site and have a great week.

  1. I’m excited about your new series, Sarah. Congrats on your print copy and I hope to read the final book in that series. I got the same shock when I had my thyroid checked. It was way out of control. Explains why some extra pounds appeared and wouldn’t go away. Good luck with your blood pressure and I hope you can control it with diet and exercise. Enjoy those lovely books and have a wonderful week.

    My Sunday Post

    • I’m glad you like the sound of the new series, Laura. When I’m ready, would you like an arc copy? And do wish me luck about getting my blood pressure down – I’m guessing I’ll need it. You have a great week, too!

  2. Oh a series about a telepathic alien, that sounds fun! Sounds like a good idea to go to the café instead of picnicking. We also had a bunch of rain here this week, which was nice as the plants and such outside sure could sue it. That must be quite the shock to discover your blood pressure is too high. Blood pressure is one of those things you really aren’t much aware of unless it’s much too high or low.

Oh you read Pirate Nemesis! I loved that one. I have to make time to read book 2 soon. I am glad to hear you enjoyed it :). Looking forward to your review of it.

    I hope you’ll have a great week!

    • Thank you Lola:). Yes, I’m going to review Pirate Nemesis this coming week.

The series about the telepathic alien is an idea I’ve been knocking around with for a long, long time – it’s great to be finally getting it ready for publication. Have a great week.

  3. Ahoy there matey! I saw some space related things and thought of yer writing and so I thought I would share. They are from Mary Robinette Kowal’s research for her Lady Astronaut series. I have only read one short story but it was excellent. I will get around to them at some point. Here are the links. Arrr!

  4. Oh no! I hope some renewed exercise can help with your blood pressure. As someone who comes from a family with a history of blood pressure problems (mainly on my mother’s side), it’s always something I get concerned about before doctor appointments. (Luckily it continues to be low for me.. but you never know when that can change.)

And oh yes! I’ll keep an eye out for more news about the paperback for Running Out of Space! It will be exciting to read it again and see how it’s changed since I beta-read it for you. 🙂

    • I know! It was a massive shock because as a young woman, I always had really low blood pressure – something they were impressed with when I was pregnant, so I thought it was all okay… But I’m not going to be daft about it – I’ll give myself a month and see if I can get it down myself.

Yes – Running Out of Space should be available as a paperback very soon:). I’d love to know what you make of it…

  5. Good luck with your blood pressure regimen! I have to watch mine too after my heart scare last year. It’s hard when you eat sensibly and are generally healthy and it STILL goes high. So frustrating! I’m sure you’ll get it under control though. Sounds like you had a busy but nice week overall.

I missed Lynn’s mash up post I think, I’ll be off to check that out.

Anachronism sounds really entertaining, and a novella too. I’ve been enjoying shorter reads lately…

    • Yes… I was a bit winded, to be honest. Because I had no idea it was so high – though I was aware I wasn’t exercising enough. Let’s hope I can get it down without resorting to tablets…

Oh do check Lynn’s mash-up post – it was hilarious. And Anachronism is one of my outstanding reads of the year so far so I’d like your take on it. Have a great week, Greg:)

  6. Maybe I was just “in the mood” this a.m., but I loved everything about this catch-up post (except your high blood pressure discovery, of course). The book snippets all seemed especially good, and I can’t wait to read Anachronism–am ordering it today. The first book of the Invisible Library series was so good, a bit out of “my ordinary” which made it special, but I was reluctant to take on the sequel, expecting disappointment. Then, your comment that you liked the first book, but LOVED the second, hooked me. Thanks for such goooooood ideas!

    • I’m delighted you enjoyed The Invisible Library so much and I hope you also love The Masked City. It has overtones of Venice, which is a city I’m especially fond of – but also takes the story and characters off in new, interesting directions:). And I’m really looking forward to seeing what you make of Anachronism! Have a lovely week, Rae:)

  7. That’s a nasty shock about your blood pressure, but it can certainly happen. I hope that you will figure out a way to get back on track without medication or consulting a doctor.

Garrison Girl looks very interesting. I’ll have to see what you think of it.

  8. Oh scary about your blood pressure! Glad you discovered it. Sometimes it’s just genetic. My grandmother is essentially a vegetarian and up until a few years ago was very active and she has high blood pressure. She’s been on a low dose medication for decades (she’s 90) with no issues so don’t stress too much if lifestyle changes don’t make it lower completely. Have a great week!

    • Thank you, Katherine – your comment has been a real comfort:)). I come from a long-lived family – my grandmother died at 102 and my mother is very hale and hearty at 82, so I figure it makes sense to take care of myself because I want an active and healthy old age… Your heartening words have made me feel more reassured, should I not manage to get things under control on my own.

  9. I hope you’re able to get that bp under control without making too many lifestyle changes. I have the same issue although I think mine also has to do with too much caffeine. Sounds like you had several great reads this week so I look forward to checking out your reviews 🙂

    • Thank you, Suzanne! Yes… I do need to step up and do the exercise – and watch my tea intake, too. Yes, it was a great reading week:). I hope the coming week is a great one for you.

  10. I also suspect my blood pressure is higher than normal for me, but I had very low blood pressure to begin with! I’m excited that you read Pirate Nemesis! I love that series a whole bunch.

  11. Oh, I see that I need to read your “Sunday Post” posts more often! This one was chock-full of goodies!! 🙂

First of all CONGRATS on getting the proof for the paperback edition of “Running Out of Space”!!! YAAAAAAAA!!! I really need to get started on this series!! I do have the Kindle edition of this book, as well as “Dying for Space”, but you know, I MUCH prefer printed books, so I’ll be ordering the first book soon, as it IS available on Amazon US! 🙂 🙂

I’ve never heard of this play, “The Meeting”, but I’ll definitely check it out!

How nice that you and your students went on a picnic, but oh, the weather didn’t cooperate…. 😦 Well, “all’s well that ends well”, as you know! You guys ended up in a café, which sounds VERY cozy! 🙂

Sorry to hear that your blood pressure was so high…. Hope your new exercise regimen does the trick, but you might need meds. I don’t like to exercise, either, lol. Good luck!!

Nice bunch of books you’ve read! I’ve already started to look them all up on good ol’ Goodreads, so I can add them all! (Well, I’ve read the first book of the Rebel of the Sands trilogy; I just need to continue with the other two!)

I’m going to bookmark this page, so I can check out all that other good stuff (the links) you’ve got listed!!

Thanks for sharing all of these goodies!!! Hope you’re having an AWESOME week so far!! HUGS!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Thank you for your kind words, Maria:)). I do hope you enjoy Running Out of Space. It was a fabulous reading week – all those books are special reads and I hope you enjoy them if you get hold of them. In the meantime – have a lovely week.Hugsxxx

  12. Isn’t it great when we can change our plans and it still is enjoyable and works out? That sounded like a lovely day! And your book! How awesome! Yes, high BP often correlates with weight gain. I an on a BP med from when I was diagnosed in January….but I haven’t taken it all summer and it was normal the other day. I am going to get back to taking it, though.

    • Ah – that’s interesting to note. I sort of had the impression that once you were on these types of medication, you were locked into taking them continuously forever and a day…

  13. Pirate Nemesis sounds good!
I hope you succeed in reducing your BP naturally, but (at the risk of sounding like a hen-pecker!) please don’t leave it too long before seeing your GP. That said, the heat also raises BP significantly and we have had it really hot lately… Hopefully, it’s just a blip. Good luck!

    • Thank you for your kind concern, Nicci – and I don’t regard your advice as any kind of nagging, and I’m certainly not going to be an idiot about it. If I can’t reduce it within the next month, I will go to the dr without any messing about.

    • Yes – it was rather a shock to realise that I’d read so many books, given this week is going really slowly… I’m not punching through Foundryside very quickly because I’m having to pay attention to all that magic!

  14. Since now you’re mentioning book 2 of “Mantivore”, I really feel like I missed a post or two in my catch up… But I’m looking forward to reading about it more as I catch up.
I also gasped when I read about your blood pressure. I hope that by now you managed to get it back in check. I remember mine being high when I put on weight as well, but losing weight and daily (moderate) exercise seemed to have helped – at the last year’s physical it was ok again, and I have an ultimately sedentary life (I go out of the house once a week at maximum).
