Can’t-Wait Wednesday – 11th April, 2018

40276268 – vintage old pocket watch and book

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week’s Can’t-Wait offering – Obscura – by Joe Hart

#adventure #science fiction #thriller #near future #psychological suspense

She’s felt it before…the fear of losing control. And it’s happening again.

In the near future, an aggressive and terrifying new form of dementia is affecting victims of all ages. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms are disturbing. Dr. Gillian Ryan is on the cutting edge of research and desperately determined to find a cure. She’s already lost her husband to the disease, and now her young daughter is slowly succumbing as well. After losing her funding, she is given the unique opportunity to expand her research. She will travel with a NASA team to a space station where the crew has been stricken with symptoms of a similar inexplicable psychosis—memory loss, trances, and violent, uncontrollable impulses.

I picked this one up because I like sci fi thrillers and crime – and I thought this premise looked intriguing. Again, I’ve cut the blurb in half – I thoroughly dislike the modern need to tell readers the first quarter of a book’s main plotpoints on the back cover – and I’m looking forward to tucking into this one very shortly.

  1. This one does sound good. I don’t get why they do that on the back covers now also. Seems like they give everything away instead of making it a bit suspenseful for the reader. Well, enjoy the new book and hope it’s a great read!

    Mary my Can’t Wait Wednesday!

  2. I have this eArc waiting for me. I have waited to read it 1) to be closer to the release date and 2) so I would forget about the blurb and go in blind. I have to admit that whatever I read (details already faded) had me super excited for this one. I also admit that I didn’t read the whole post because I didn’t want to remind meself. But I am on board for this one!

    • It’s okay – I hadn’t posted all the blurb on account of the fact it was FAR too chatty and gave away too many of the early plotpoints – as so many blurbs seem to these days. And then I had a rant about that, too:)). Have a great week, Cap and I look forward to reading what you make of this one!

  3. I’m intrigued. Your comment about long blurbs made me lol – especially because I’d been thinking that very thing myself recently. What is it that makes people want to write an essay on the back of a book. Just stop.

  4. I didn’t participate in this week’s CWW hop, as my freaking laptop suddenly decided to NOT let me log in, lol. Enter my wonderful knight in shining armor: my computer geek husband! If anyone can get a recalcitrant computer to behave, HE can!! Well, after some more frantic trying to uncover the reason for a couple of glitches, everything’s back to normal! YAAAAY!!! And, of course, I have quite a bit of catching up to do, in regards to replies and comments back, as I could not get into blog AT ALL for a few days. So I will be leaving more comments on your blog tomorrow, never fear! 🙂 🙂

Thanks so much for ALWAYS leaving such WONDERFUL comments on my blog!! And now, about this book you’re featuring. It does sound a bit creepy, but also quite intriguing! And heck, there’s a space station involved, so I think I might just pick this one up! Thanks for putting it on my galactic radar!! HUGS!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ 🙂 🙂 🙂
