Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
This is my choice of the day:
Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet by Charlie N. Holmberg
6%: He zooms forward so quickly I lose sight of him. I stumble back from the woods’ edge, my heart in my throat as he appears before me, his face close to mine. His hands jut forward as though to grab my shoulders, but he is as ephemeral as a spectre, and they pass right through me.
“Your name!” he shouts, breathless. “Your name, tell me your name!”
BLURB: Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn’t know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from. And then this ghostly winged man starts to appear to her – and nothing is the same, again…
I’ve significantly tweaked the blurb, because once again, it insists on telling one of the major plotpoints in the narrative that I think is far better experienced as a reader. This book is an interesting approach to the slew of fairytale retellings we’ve seen appear – a story that weaves a path between a number of them… It is a tale of loss and longing and Maire’s struggle to recall who she is and what has happened to her. I’ve really enjoyed reading it and my review will be appearing shortly.
I love the teaser! It definitely sounds like a book I would enjoy.
I have this sitting waiting on my kindle so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. The reviews I’ve seen have been a little mixed.
Oh, really? I have very much enjoyed it – but I’m a sucker for first person, present tense pov.
This sounds like such an interesting book! I love the concept of the baker’s gift and the ghostly man. I am so curious as to what will happen next! ❤
This one was a delightful surprise, I have to say:).
I’ve been meaning to read Charlie Holmberg’s work in general, including this newest book. So I’ll definitely keep an eye out for your review on it. Plus, a magical bakery?? My sweet tooth already approves. 🙂
I’ve really enjoyed this one. I haven’t come across this author before so it was a real treat.
Good teaser! It sounds like an interesting book. My Teaser is from Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler. It’s supposed to be a retelling of sorts of the Taming of the Shrew.
This one sounds interesting. I’m looking forward to your review already ;).
My teaser comes from the same book. I had very mixed feeling about this one. My teaser this week comes from a soon-to-be-released fantasy – Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet by Charlie N. Holmberg. Happy reading!
Fabulous ability…and I wonder what will happen to her now? Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “BEACH BLUES”
Yes, and it’s very well written. I really enjoyed this one:)
This book sounds great! I have the same peeve about blurbs revealing too much. I rarely read more than the first few lines, if I can help it. 😛
Here’s my teaser for the week: Graceling by Kristin Cashore.
Keep the pages turning!
Thank you! Yes – I do get fed up with how many plotpoints get included. Oo… just swinging by to your site to check out your TT:)
I hate it when blurbs give too much away–thank you for tweaking it for us. 🙂 I have been curious about this book–such an interesting premise! (And a beautiful cover.)
I’m afraid I get quite ruthless with chatty blurbs – I now won’t read them before I’ve the read the book as so many times they’ve ended up spoiling the experience for me! I really liked this one – I’m looking to writing up the review.
Ooooh, this sounds really good!! I sort of remember reading another book on emotions with food (though I don’t think it was this one), and I liked that, so I should like this! 😀
