Teaser

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This is my choice of the day:
Planetfall – by Emma Newman
planetfall46%: A second urgent message brings me back into my body, now wretched with tension. This one could be from Kay, saying she’s at my house and has seen inside, that they’re coming to find me and put me into treatment of some kind. There will be an emergency council session addressing how to deal with someone like me. They’ll vote to destroy my house and take my things away.

BLURB: Renata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi’s vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution, and war. Ren believed in that vision enough to give up everything to follow Suh-Mi into the unknown.

More than twenty-two years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided, alone. All that time, Ren has worked hard as the colony’s 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment, and harboring a devastating secret.

Ren continues to perpetuate the lie forming the foundation of the colony for the good of her fellow colonists, despite the personal cost. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall, a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi.

The truth Ren has concealed since planetfall can no longer be hidden. And its revelation might tear the colony apart…

I’d saved this book as a bit of a treat for myself – and my instincts were spot on. I’m loving it. This, for me, is science fiction at its best. Ren is a spiky, smart protagonist carrying battle scars of a terrible event and we are right alongside as she struggles to hold onto a compromised status quo, for fear of what might happen if she doesn’t. Keeping my fingers crossed that the ending is just as good…

    • I love the title and am very tempted – but right now my TBR list is growing like Topsy since I really have got the hang of NetGalley (it’s becoming a vice…) I need to get a grip!

  1. This sounds without doubt like a good read and the teaser makes me wonder what other trouble the character is in. I hope you will keep enjoying it!

Happy reading! Here’s my teaser this week of Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaira.

  2. I am glad you are enjoying this one so far. I like the sound of it and enjoyed your teaser, I will definitely be adding this one to my wish list!

    • Oh, this one comes HIGHLY recommended. I’ve had a great reading year so far, and ‘Planetfall’ is right up there among my absolute favourites. Have you read any of Emma Newman’s The Split Worlds fantasy series?

      • No, I haven’t tried her work before. Sounds like I should though.

      • She’s an interesting character – she also runs a fabulous podcast called Tea and Jeopardy, where she interviews the likes of Joe Abercrombie while all sorts of life-threatening creatures and events kick off around them… Funny and enjoyable.
