Teaser Tuesday – 21st July

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3-300x203Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teasers:
‘The wind ruffled the pages; raindrops caught and tossed in the breeze spattered down, as if they too wanted to read decodedthe contents of this letter. Maybe it was because he had not slept well the night before; maybe it was because the letter had touched some hidden corner of his mind: the old man sat quiet for a long time after he had finished reading.’ P.97 of Decoded by Mai Jia, who is China’s bestselling espionage novelist, according to the cover.

It’s certainly an intriguing and very different read, and I’ll be reviewing it in due course.

    • Hi Stephen,
It’s certainly a fascinating read, which is why I’ve shared it. I haven’t read much Chinese literature before, so am enjoying the different world view and very unusual feel to the writing. Great choice regarding Richard Morgan’s book – I think his earlier stuff is by far the best:).

      • Thanks, I lived in East Asia for a few years and I love Chinese and Japanese literature. Just got Decoded on kindle, btw, I’ll let you know after reading it :). Re: Morgan, I do agree with you, Kovacs and books of that series are definitively better and more original than recent stuff.

    • Thank you for stopping by to comment, Beth. Yes, it’s certainly an unusual read – though if you’re looking for edge-of-your-seat, non-stop action, that isn’t remotely what it is about. To be honest, it slightly defies normal genre boundaries… If you do track it down, do let me know what you think!

    • Hi Nadene, Thank you for dropping by and leaving your link. I haven’t come across Katy Regnery, though your review and the synopsis sounded intriguingly different for a romance – and very relevant, given the stresses of balancing a career and marriage for women these days. Lovely to hook up with another book addict:).

  1. Hi Wendy, Thank you for dropping by – yes, this is a book about a code-breaker but there isn’t much edge-of-your-seat, non-stop action. It’s more of a slow burn of discovery with a completely different feel to Western writing. I was very struck by your extract from ‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ – I’m trying to widen my reading to include other cultures and this sounds absolutely perfect. I’m adding it to be TBR mountain.
